Many high school students struggle to choose between Electrical Engineering and Informatics Engineering because both are “about computers”. The difference lies in what you build.
Informatics Engineering: the world of software
Focuses on applications, information systems, databases and software engineering. The results of the work live on screens and servers.
Electrical Engineering: smart hardware
Focuses on electronic circuits, sensors, microcontrollers, control systems and automation — then embeds software and AI into devices. The results can be held in your hand: robots, IoT devices, automation panels, smart cameras.
Simple questions to ask yourself
- Do you like taking gadgets apart to see how they work? → Electrical.
- Prefer building apps and working with data on a computer? → Informatics.
- Want both: AI working inside a device? → The Smart Systems (AI & IoT) concentration in Electrical Engineering.
